With its unique history as a warm winter vacation destination for Midwesterners, Pasadena and its surrounding communities in the San Gabriel Valley became the first western "suburb," changing the face of what was once a sleepy farming community.
Prominent Midwestern industrialists with surnames such as Busch, Gamble, Huntington and Wrigley ventured here around the turn of the 20th century. They created lavish estates designed by famed architects, sometimes hidden behind fruit trees on streets such as Orange Grove Boulevard.
Many of these winter homes still exist today as museums, nonprofit headquarters, or libraries. The size, opulence, and detail of these homes were unique for the era and region, and their current owners have allowed them to be opened to the public for one month of tours each spring to experience their grandeur as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design.
Teams of local and national interior and landscape designers reimagine each estate, highlighting the latest trends in high-style living. For 60 years, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design has established itself as one of the largest and most successful home & garden tours in the country, drawing enthusiasts back year after year for the exceptionally unique settings, historical architectural beauty, and inspiring design.
